Massage Initiative:
Last May, with the help of John Bentley, we applied to The Big Lottery Fund for their support in a complementary massage therapy programme for pupils at Medina House School. In August we heard that this had been successful, since then we have had meetings with Hugh Harrison of Watchbell House and Dr Lesley Powell from the Coventry University Research Centre for Health. Very shortly existing massage therapists from the island will receive additional training in the approach that Dr Powell has developed. The programme will run over the course of next year and will train parents and staff in these massage techniques. Training will be provided through a series of five workshops, these will be held at times to suit different groups of parents and will include evenings and weekends as well as during the school day. The intention is that once the initiative has finished the work will be continued by these parents and staff. The work will be evaluated by assessing changes in the behaviour and well being of the children taking part.
If you would like to learn more about this approach and its effects, you may like to do your own internet searches, look on the school website or request copies of published articles which can be emailed to you or sent home with your child. The programme has sufficient funding to include every child at school.
I have no doubt this approach can be of benefit to both the ‘giver’ and the ’receiver’ and would welcome all parents to apply.

Fire Assembly November 2006
On the 20th November 2006 the school was lucky enough to have some members of the local Fire Station to perform a very special Assembly for the pupils and Staff members. Traci, a Teachers Assistant from the school is also a Retained Fire Fighter for the town of Ventnor on the Island. She arranged the assembly with one of her collegues, Mat, a full time Fire Fighter, based in Newport. In the assembly we saw the fire fighters dressed in the complete fire fighters outfit, including Helmet and Breathing Apparatus. We saw how the various equipment worked, such as a Fire Hose, B. A. (Breathing Apparatus) and Bleaper to name a few. The pupils were given the chance to dress as a firefighters, and we also had a visit from Wellyphant, to promote fire safety. The assembly was a great success, and we hope to do more in the future.

Global Rock Challenge 2006
In May this year classes 5P and 6 took part in the Global Rock Challenge at Portsmouth Cathedral. The Global Rock Challenge(TM) concept began in Sydney, Australia in 1980 and is now staged in over 120 locations worldwide. New Zealand, Germany, the UK and South Africa have all taken up the Global Rock Challenge(TM) phenomenon, with more countries to follow.
The Global Rock Challenge(TM) is a chance for secondary and primary school students to take part in a dance, drama and design spectacular. While the result is a professionally staged event, the Global Rock Challenge is about having fun while making healthy lifestyle choices. Schools form teams to design, develop and produce an eight minute production number to a theme of their choice. They produce a soundtrack, design and construct sets and costumes and develop choreography. Schools rehearse for months prior to the event and come together for an exhilarating day in a professional theatre on show day, culminating in a live event performance in front of hundreds of family and friends.
The Schools Global Rock Challenge theme for this year was: "A Wonderful World".
